Float Mount Picture Frames

Float mounting is a way of presenting a print so it appears to float inside the frame. Instead of a board sitting over the edges of the paper, the print is raised on hidden spacers above the backing — leaving a shadow gap all the way around and every edge of the sheet visible.

A mat covers the outer edge of the paper and gives a crisp, formal window, which suits diplomas and photographs. A float mount shows the whole sheet including any deckled or torn edge, and suits fine-art prints, watercolors and hand-made papers.

Choose 10mm, 20mm or 30mm on each side; 20mm is the default. The frame grows by twice the gap you pick, so a wider float means a larger frame — the price updates as you choose.

Yes. Pick the deckled paper edge option and we finish the sheet with a soft torn edge, then float it so that edge is the feature. It is the reason most people float-mount a watercolour or a fine-art print.

No — these are float mount frames for works on paper: prints, photographs, watercolors and maps. They use a 32mm (1¼") deep flat profile, not a deep shadow box for three-dimensional items.

The “From” price at the top of this page is our smallest float mount frame, in your currency. The price follows the size of the frame we build — your print plus the shadow gap on every side — so a bigger print or a wider gap costs a little more. The price you see is the price you pay, with the print included.

Not at the moment. Float mounting is done in our workshop on a print we make, so upload your image and we print it, float it and frame it. If you'd rather mount an original yourself, our standard frames come with clear fitting instructions.

Both use the same deep molding. A gallery frame adds a hidden spacer that lifts the glazing off the artwork, and the print sits flat behind it, usually with a mat. A float mount raises the print itself on a float board, so its edges stay on show with a shadow gap around them and no mat at all.
