What a float mount is

A float mount raises your print on hidden spacers so it sits clear of the backing board and the whole sheet stays on show. Nothing overlaps the artwork: a shadow gap runs right around it, and the paper's own edge becomes part of the picture.

Every float mount frame here is made to order from a 32mm (1¼") deep moulding — the depth is what makes the effect work. Choose a 10mm, 20mm or 30mm shadow gap, a straight or deckled paper edge, and any of eleven wood finishes, in inches or centimetres.

What is float mounting?

Float mounting is a way of presenting a print so it appears to float inside the frame. Instead of a board sitting over the edges of the paper, the print is raised on hidden spacers above the backing — leaving a shadow gap all the way around and every edge of the sheet visible.

Float mount vs mat — which should I choose?

A mat covers the outer edge of the paper and gives a crisp, formal window, which suits diplomas and photographs. A float mount shows the whole sheet including any deckled or torn edge, and suits fine-art prints, watercolors and hand-made papers.

How big is the shadow gap?

Choose 10mm, 20mm or 30mm on each side; 20mm is the default. The frame grows by twice the gap you pick, so a wider float means a larger frame — the price updates as you choose.

Can you print a deckled edge?

Yes. Pick the deckled paper edge option and we finish the sheet with a soft torn edge, then float it so that edge is the feature. It is the reason most people float-mount a watercolour or a fine-art print.

Can you float mount an object or memorabilia?

No — these are float mount frames for works on paper: prints, photographs, watercolors and maps. They use a 32mm (1¼") deep flat profile, not a deep shadow box for three-dimensional items.
