Collage Frame or Collage Print? How to Frame Lots of Photos Together

Quick answer: a collage frame has a mount with several openings, and you put a separate photo behind each one. A collage print puts all your photos on one sheet, laid out for you, and goes in a single frame. Choose a collage print if you have more than a handful of photos or want them evenly spaced with no cutting; choose a multi-aperture frame if you want to swap photos in and out.

Four separate photos behind a multi-opening mat compared with a nine-photo collage printed on one sheet.

When a multi-aperture frame is better

If you like to change the photos every few months — the latest school photos, say — a mount with separate openings lets you swap one without reprinting anything. It also suits photos you already own as prints and don't want to scan.

When a collage print is better

For most framed collages, especially gifts, one print is easier and looks neater. Every photo is the same distance from its neighbours, nothing slips out of line inside the frame, and you are not limited to the number of holes in a mount. Our photo collage prints take anything from 2 to 50 photos on a single sheet of archival photo paper, printed and framed for you in a handmade wood or metal frame and delivered ready to hang.

How many photos for each size

Keep each photo at least about 8 cm across so faces still read from a few steps away:

PhotosSmallest size we'd suggest
2 to 4A4
5 to 9A3
10 to 16A2
17 to 3060 × 60 cm
31 to 50A1

Start from the number of photos you have: 2-photo, 3-photo, 4-photo, 6-photo, 9-photo, 12-photo, 16-photo, 20-photo and 30-photo collages each open with that layout ready to fill.

Mount or no mount?

A mount around a collage print gives it the same gallery look as a multi-aperture frame, with one clean border instead of many. It also stops the print touching the glass. Without a mount, the photos run closer to the frame for a more modern look.

Frequently asked questions

What is a photo collage frame?

Either a frame with a mount that has several openings, one per photo, or a single frame holding a photo collage printed as one picture. Both hang as one piece; the printed collage holds more photos and needs no cutting or lining up.

Is it better to print a collage or use a collage frame?

For a gift or a permanent display, a printed collage usually looks neater: every photo is evenly spaced and you can include up to 50. A multi-aperture frame is better if you want to swap photos regularly.

How many photos can go in a collage print?

Ours take anything from 2 to 50 photos on one sheet, in a grid or with one larger photo and smaller ones around it.

What size should a photo collage be?

Big enough that each photo is about 8 cm across: A4 for up to 4 photos, A3 for up to 9, A2 for up to 16, and 60 × 60 cm or A1 for 20 or more.

Do you sell multi-aperture frames?

No. We print your collage as one picture and frame it in a single handmade frame, with an optional mount around the whole print, so it arrives ready to hang.

Can I put a mount on a collage print?

Yes. A mount goes around the whole collage, giving one clean border and keeping the print off the glass.
