A slim, square 17mm profile — understated and endlessly versatile, in a deep, confident black in a smooth, closed-grain finish. It suits monochrome photography, bold typographic prints and anything you want to feel grounded and gallery-sharp. Each frame is cut, mitered and assembled to fit your print — handmade in the UK and shipped ready to hang.

Made to your size. Every frame is cut, joined and glazed to order, which is why we can't accept returns on made-to-measure frames. Please check your size before ordering.

Arrives perfect, or we remake it. Every frame travels in specialised picture frame packaging. If anything reaches you less than perfect, send us a photo within 48 hours of delivery and we'll remake it free.

Caring for it. Peel any protective film from the glazing, then clean with a soft, dry cloth. Don't use glass cleaner.

Choosing a black frame

Black is the most versatile frame colour. It sharpens contrast in black-and-white photography, grounds bold typography and posters, and holds its own against colourful artwork without competing with it.

The choice is mostly about width and surface. For a clean, modern line, pick the slim 17mm closed-grain profile or the ultra-slim matt black aluminium frame, which all but disappears around the print. The deeper 20 × 32mm profile gives larger prints and posters more presence, and the flat 33mm face frames your artwork with a broad border. Open-grain versions let the wood texture show through the colour, and the turned bobbin profile adds a decorative, period feel.

A white mount inside a black frame is the classic gallery pairing and gives smaller artwork room to breathe. Choose a black mount for dark or high-contrast images where you want frame and border to read as one.

Is a black or white frame better for a black-and-white photo?

Both work, for different effects. A black frame gives a black-and-white photo more contrast and weight; a white frame feels lighter and more gallery-like. For photos with deep blacks, a black frame with a white mount is the classic choice.

Are black frames wood or metal?

We sell both. Most of our black frames are solid wood, in closed-grain, open-grain, smooth and bobbin profiles. There is also an ultra-slim matt black aluminium frame for a minimal, modern look.

What sizes do black frames come in?

More than 80 sizes: inch sizes from 6 × 8 up to 24 × 36, metric sizes up to 60 × 90 cm, A4 to A1, square, and panoramic formats up to 100 × 40 cm. Choose yours in the frame options on this page. For a size that isn’t listed, use our custom-size frame designer.

Is the size the outside of the frame?

No. The size is the artwork the frame holds. The moulding adds its own width on every side, so the outside dimensions depend on the profile you choose. Allow for the frame border when measuring your wall space.

Can I add a mount?

Yes, as an optional extra. Choose a white or black mount, or a premium mount with a pattern or printed text, when you set up your frame. The openings on offer depend on the frame size you pick.

What comes with the frame?

Each frame is cut and assembled to order in our UK workshop, with clear cast-acrylic glazing and archival backing, and arrives ready to hang. Orders are dispatched in 2–5 working days.

Can you print my photo, or just send the frame?

Both. Upload a photo, print or artwork and we print it and fit it in the frame, or choose frame only and we send the empty frame for your own artwork. The matt black aluminium frame is available as frame only in selected sizes.

What's the difference between closed and open grain?

Closed grain has a smooth painted finish; open grain leaves the wood texture visible through the colour.
