Popular frame sizes explained
8 x 10 frames
The classic photo enlargement size — big enough to read across a room, small enough to group in a gallery wall. Browse 8x10 picture frames.
11 x 14 frames

18 x 24 frames
The standard small-poster size, and a strong choice for large art prints. Browse 18x24 picture frames.
Frame size vs print size with a mat
When a print is matted, the frame is one standard size up so the mat forms a border around the print:
| Print size | Typical frame with mat |
| 5 x 7 in | 8 x 10 in |
| 8 x 10 in | 11 x 14 in |
| 11 x 14 in | 16 x 20 in |
| 16 x 20 in | 20 x 24 in |
| 18 x 24 in | 24 x 30 in |
These pairings are conventions, not rules — a wider or narrower mat border can look better depending on the artwork. A made-to-measure frame lets you choose the exact mat border you want rather than working around off-the-shelf sizes.
What if my print isn't a standard size?
Panoramas, square prints, vintage posters and original art often don't match any standard size. Rather than trimming the artwork or forcing it behind a mat that doesn't fit, use a custom size frame — every frame we make is cut to order to the exact millimetre, in any wood or metal finish.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common picture frame size?
8 x 10 inches for photos and 11 x 14 or 16 x 20 inches for wall art are the most common frame sizes. 4 x 6 inches remains the standard for snapshot photo prints.
What size frame do I need for an 8x10 photo?
An 8 x 10 frame for the photo full-bleed, or an 11 x 14 frame with a mat for a gallery look.
Are picture frames measured by the frame or the picture?
By the picture. A "16 x 20 frame" holds a 16 x 20 inch print — the outer dimensions of the frame are larger, depending on the width of the moulding.
