Standard Photo Print Sizes: Chart & Aspect Ratio Guide
Share
Quick answer: the standard photo print sizes are 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 inches. 4x6 matches the 3:2 aspect ratio of most phone and camera photos, while 5x7 and 8x10 require light cropping. Full chart and aspect ratios below.

Why aspect ratio matters more than size
Most phone and DSLR cameras shoot at a 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio. A print size with a different ratio has to crop the photo:
- 4x6 (3:2) — prints most camera photos edge to edge with no crop.
- 5x7 (7:5) — crops a small slice from the long edge.
- 8x10 (5:4) — the biggest crop of the common sizes; roughly an inch of a 3:2 image's long edge is lost. Keep heads and feet away from the frame edge.
- 8x12 and 20x30 (3:2) — full-frame alternatives when you don't want to crop at all.
Phone portrait photos are often 4:3 (or 16:9 if shot in video-style ratios) — check before ordering a large print, and preview the crop rather than guessing.
Printing photos for framing
If the photo is destined for a wall, it usually pays to size the print to the frame rather than the other way round. A matted frame also gives you flexibility: the mat hides the exact print edge, so a small crop difference disappears. See our guide to standard picture frame sizes for the classic print-to-frame pairings, or upload your photo to our framed photo print service and we print it on archival paper and frame it to any size — standard or fully custom.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common photo print size?
4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm) — it matches the native 3:2 ratio of most cameras, so photos print without cropping.
What photo sizes can I frame?
Any of them. Standard sizes like 8x10 and 11x14 suit off-the-shelf frames; anything else can be framed with a custom size frame cut to the exact print.
What resolution do I need to print a photo large?
Aim for around 150–300 pixels per inch at the print size. A 12-megapixel phone photo (4000 x 3000 px) prints cleanly up to roughly 20 x 15 inches — larger is often still acceptable at normal viewing distance.
