Why Is Custom Framing So Expensive? (And When It's Worth It)

The real reasons custom framing costs so much — labor, overhead and glazing upgrades — and how to get the same quality for less.

Custom framing is expensive because it's labor-priced retail: someone measures, cuts, joins, mats, glazes and fits your piece by hand, in a shop whose rent and staff time are built into every job. The materials themselves — moulding, mat board, glazing — are rarely the expensive part. That's also why the price can drop dramatically without the quality dropping at all.

Where the money goes in a framing quote

  • Labor: a one-off custom job takes a skilled framer an hour or more across measuring, cutting, joining and fitting.
  • Retail overhead: rent, utilities and consultation time, divided across a modest number of jobs.
  • Upsells: speciality glazing (UV, museum glass) and premium mouldings can double a quote. They're genuinely better — but optional for most art in most rooms.
  • Materials: typically the smallest slice. The same moulding profile sells to every framer from the same mills.

When full-service framing is worth paying for

Original art with real value, fragile or oversized pieces, needlework, and anything requiring conservation handling deserve a skilled local framer — you're buying their hands and judgment, and that's worth the premium.

When it isn't

Prints, posters, photographs and digital art — the vast majority of what gets framed — need exact measurements, clean cuts and proper materials, all of which a made-to-order workshop does by machine to the fraction of an inch. You enter the dimensions, the frame arrives assembled with mat, glazing, backing and hardware, dispatched in 2–5 working days. Same finished object, minus the consultation and the overhead. How to cut the cost without cutting quality

Choose a slim, simple moulding (the biggest price lever), keep standard clear glazing unless the piece faces direct sun, and put the savings into a conservation mat — the cheapest upgrade with the largest visual payoff. You can price the whole job, frame and mat together, with our online custom framing designer.

Frequently asked questions

Is framing more expensive than the art itself?

Often, yes — especially for posters and open-edition prints. That's normal: the frame is a piece of made-to-order furniture protecting paper. Made-to-order online pricing usually brings the frame back below the cost of the art.

Does custom framing add value to artwork?

It protects value rather than adding it: conservation matting and proper backing prevent the fading, cockling and acid burn that destroy value. Poor framing actively damages art.

What's the cheapest way to frame something custom-sized?

Made-to-order online: slim moulding, standard glazing, conservation mat. You get exact sizing — the thing that actually makes framing 'custom' — without the counter overhead.
